Hit-and-run driver kills woman crossing Queens street

A hit-and-run driver fatally struck a 47-year-old woman as she crossed an intersection by a Queens park early Saturday, police said.
The woman, Lucia Grant, was crossing 150th St. at North Conduit Ave., just steps from Baisley Pond Park in Kew Gardens Hills, at about 6 a.m. when a driver slammed into her.
A gas station worker near the scene said he didn’t hear any screams or any sounds of a collision and was not aware of it until a customer told him a woman had been struck and that people were assisting the victim.
“She was down on the ground. At that time, she was laid down unconscious. It was serious,” Ram Patel, 28 told the Daily News.
The victim was in the crosswalk when she was hit by the motorist, who never stopped.
EMS rushed the woman to Jamaica Hospital, where she died.
“It’s busy,” Patel said. “There’s lots of accidents happen. There’s always a flow on 150th. There’s a highway, so there’s always traffic here.”
Cops roped off the corner and were scouring the area for surveillance video footage that could help them identify the vehicle involved in the collision.
Lloyd Singh, 56, was driving to get his morning coffee when he noticed the intersection was blocked off and soon learned of the tragedy.
“Oh, my God,” Singh said. “I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s so sad.”
So far in 2024, 106 pedestrians have been fatally struck by motor vehicle drivers in New York City, representing a 16.5 percent increase compared to this point in 2023, when 91 pedestrians had been killed by drivers, according to police statistics.
